Tan Dog Breeds

Tan colored coats are common in several breeds and mixed breed dogs. It is sometimes referred to as "fawn" and comes in several shades from light tan to reddish tan. The loci (location) of genes on the chromosomes determines coat color in dogs. The D locus alters the intensity of color. Dogs which are "dd" will have grey or bluish fur instead of black and tan fur instead of brown.

Boxers, Great Danes, Pugs, Chows, Doberman Pinschers and Pomeranians are common breeds that may be tan. Tan markings often appear with black in many breeds.
